Dyeing papermaking fiber with natural materials not only yields beautiful colors, but opens up many possibilities for decorative techniques. We’ll explore the Japanese tradition of natural colorants, learning some of the oldest methods of making decorative papers. We will prepare dyestuffs and dye fibers before sheet forming; form Japanese-style nagashizuki sheets; layer dyed fibers for traditional and experimental techniques of creating imagery; and make lace papers that can be used as layers or on their own. Experience with Japanese-style papermaking helpful.
