School for PaperWasps 2008
The school for paperwasps is an intensive course focusing on the concept of paper and offers an insight into current practical and theoretical standards of paper making and paperart.
To give a clear idea of the variety of processes involved in paperart and papermaking a broad range of videos, books and overhead folios will accompany practical working in the studio.
Run by Beatrix Mapalagama, director of the papermaking and paperarts studio.
Medium: German and English
Based in the center of Vienna close to the southern raiwaystation.
Equipped with a Hollander beater, press, pulpsprayer, drying box, moulds and more.
The fee for 8 days is 600,00 Euro and includes all material. You may also register for segments of the Workshop.
Accomodation: There are hotelrooms in any category nearby. We are happy to book a room for you or mail a list of hotels.
Free time: In your free time you can make use of the small paper library and browse through current periodicals. Furthermore the studio is ideally located, it is in walking distance from the Belvedere castle, the Hundertwasserhaus and the depot for modern art. Easy to reach is also the Viennese Prater, the Central Cemetery or the Museum for Applied Arts. Most of Viennas important sights can be reached by underground within few stations ( 3 stops from Stephansplatz/St. Stephans Cathedral).
If there are exhibitions scheduled concerning paperart, we´ll visit this Gallery or museum.
Please bring proper clothing and waterproofed shoes. We are also looking forward to a documentation of your artwork.

The four focus areas offered are
- Foundation course on papermaking: 18th and 19th May, fee 140,00 Euro
- Fibre processing – Japanese and Nepalese paper: 20th and 21th May, fee 170,00 Euro
- Creative Papermaking: 16th and 17th May, fee 200,00 Euro
- Paperobjects: 22th and 23th May, fee 170,00 Euro

1. Foundation course on papermaking
Practical: Dipping, pressing and drying methods; Making your own classical cloth – and cotton/flax book paper; Create your own classical and alternative watermark; Find out the proper ph-degree in your paper and different additives to the pulp.
Theory: The history of paper making; Papertechnology; Video: Paper today; A former papermill in Portugal
2. Fibre processing – Japanese and Nepalese paper
Practical: Prepare row flax, natural straw and abaca halfstuff to learn to handle different fibers and paperqualities. As according to the Japanese tradition paper from Mulberry tree bast will also be made; Creating also large formats using the Nepalese swimming moulds;
Theory: Conventional papermaking fibres; Various methods of breaking down the fibres; Paper making and paperart in Asia; Video:

3. Creative Papermaking
Practical: Coloring pulp, pulppainting, sandwiching, pouring, embossing, light painting, bags and books during papermaking.
Theory: Coloring methods of paperpulp; International paperart; Video: Paper and Gold by Elaine Koretsky;
4. Paperobjects
Practical: working with stiff and flexible armatures, use of highshrinkage flax and abaca for stable, colorintensive and surprising paperobjects;
